Ken Chivers
It is with great sadness that I have to advise you that Ken Chivers, Past President of Welwyn RFC, passed away peacefully on 29th October 2024 at Lister Hospital. He was approaching his 95th birthday.
He and Olive celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in the summer.
Ken’s achievements at Welwyn were colossal, as the Honours Boards confirm:
Captain 1959-60 and 1963-64
Chairman 1978-82
President 1986-90
Life Member
Moving from the Welsh valleys to the new town in the early 1950s, Ken was a lifelong teacher in Welwyn Garden City and encouraged many of his pupils to take up the game. Towards the end of his playing career, he dropped down the sides imparting his wealth of knowledge and experience to players new to the game.
Wearing his Hertfordshire RFU hat, Ken served as an U21 selector from 1985 to 1995 and became Chairman of Youth in 1987, when he also joined the Executive Committee. On his retirement from HRFU activities in 1995 he was elected a Life Member.
